Energy Efficient Building Design

Energy efficiency has become a major consideration in the construction of new homes and buildings. Insulation, building materials, windows, heating systems all have an impact on your energy efficiency, but just how much?

By working at the scale model level (approx 2' x 3') students have the opportunity to test the impact of many small individual changes to the way a building is designed and constructed. They will be able to calculate the rate of heat loss for each design, and determine whether the additional expenditure or cost saving yielded by the design is worth it. You can download the project guide here:

You may also find our guide on Calculating Savings useful. This guides you through performing basic cost / benefit analyses all the way up to complex Net Present Value analyses, as well as helping you assess the size any carbon reductions you may be achieving.
